Who We Are

We do not seek only to relieve symptoms. We seek to transform lives through science, psychological depth, and respect for the sacred.

What is Kaapi

Banisteriopsis caapi (Soul vine) is one of the sacred plants that make up yagé (ayahuasca). It does not contain the component responsible for the mystical experiences that deepen and transform human consciousness; rather, it contains a molecule that prevents the body from rejecting the molecule that does produce those effects, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). How our Amazonian ancestors discovered that the combination of two forest plants so distant from each other was necessary remains a mystery of ancestral wisdom.

At Kaapi, we believe that a psychedelic experience without professional support can not only have adverse consequences for some individuals, but also misses the opportunity to harness the deep and lasting therapeutic effects that people with mental health challenges may need.

“Just as B. caapi is necessary to produce the psychedelic effect, Kaapi is the essential complement for a transformative experience to occur safely.”

Our Values

Scientific Evidence

Every clinical decision is based on rigorous research. We measure outcomes objectively. We do not promise miracles.

Professional Compassion

Warm, supportive therapeutic presence. We accompany you throughout the entire process and celebrate your transformations.

Unwavering Ethics

Comprehensive informed consent, full transparency, and absolute respect for patient autonomy.

Responsible Activism

We work toward the decriminalization and responsible regulation of substances with transformative potential. We challenge stigma through scientific evidence.

Integrative and Dynamic Psychiatry

Integrative psychiatry understands mental health as a complex process in which the body, mind, personal history, relationships, environment, and deeper dimensions of human experience interact. It combines evidence-based conventional psychiatry with complementary, mind-body, and lifestyle interventions (nutrition, sleep, exercise, breathing, meditation), addressing the person from a biological, psychological, social, and spiritual perspective.

Dynamic psychiatry considers that much of psychic functioning is unconscious, that symptoms carry meaning, and that mental life is organized around conflicts, defenses, internalized relationships, and behavioral patterns that reemerge in the present. It allows for an understanding of how early experiences and significant relationships shape the way a person feels, thinks, and suffers. It also recognizes that the therapeutic relationship is neither neutral nor secondary, but a living space where these patterns are expressed and can be worked through.

Our Differentiating Factor

Psychoanalytic Depth

What sets us apart is our psychoanalytic approach. We do not simply administer substances; we use psychedelic agents as amplifiers to access the dynamic and collective unconscious, as well as holotropic states of consciousness, always accompanied by a deep and integrative psychotherapeutic process.

Evidence-based medicine

We follow protocols validated by Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Imperial College London, the world’s leading institutions in psychedelic research. Each treatment is supported by decades of scientific evidence, continuous medical supervision, and objective outcome measurement.

Ritual and Consciousness

We honor the ancestral traditions of medicinal plants such as Banisteriopsis caapi (the origin of our name). We integrate practices like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, creating sacred spaces that facilitate mystical experiences of genuine transformation.

Safety First

Full medical team including a psychiatrist certified in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy and anesthesiologists present at every session. Rigorous screening, continuous monitoring of vital signs, and established emergency protocols. Patient safety is our highest commitment.

Joel Klahr

Founder – Scientific Director

2791.jpg

Dr. Joel Klahr is a psychiatrist who graduated from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, with more than 6 years of clinical experience in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. His training combines the rigor of Western medicine with a deep understanding of unconscious processes and the more subtle dimensions of human experience.

Training and Background

He completed his specialization in Psychiatry at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (2016–2019) and his training as a Psychoanalyst at the Sociedad Psicoanalítica Freudiana de Colombia (2020–2023). He is also certified in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute in Colorado, USA (2025–2026).

For five years (2019–2024), he was part of the team at the Centro de Memoria y Cognición Intellectus at Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, where he worked in neuropsychiatry, home-based psychogeriatrics, and group psychotherapy. This experience allowed him to develop a comprehensive understanding of mental health across multiple dimensions: biological, psychological, social, and existential.

He has further complemented his training with international rotations at the Institut universitaire en santé mentale Douglas at McGill University (Montreal) and at Western University (Ontario), focusing on acute psychosis, dual diagnosis, and intensive psychiatric care.

Therapeutic Approach

Dr. Klahr integrates contemporary psychiatry, Freudian psychoanalysis, and psychedelic-assisted therapies, creating a unique approach that honors both scientific evidence and the depth of introspective work. His practice is grounded in the conviction that self-knowledge, rather than mere symptom suppression, is the most genuine path toward well-being and transformation.

In his private practice since 2019, he has supported processes of individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, working with individuals seeking not only symptom relief, but also a deeper understanding of themselves and their relational patterns.

Vision at Kaapi

As the founder of Kaapi, Dr. Klahr leads the development of a care model that integrates Ketamine- and Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy within a clinical, ethical, and psychoanalytic framework. His vision is to offer a space where cutting-edge medicine dialogues with ancestral wisdom, and where each person can access expanded states of consciousness in a safe, supported, and meaningful way
